What is Second Serve?

Second Serve is a new program of First Serve designed to maintain and strengthen the relationships started on September 8, our day of service. Between now and September 13, 2020, Second Serve will sponsor several volunteer events at the First Serve project locations in North Hill

Second Serve kicked off on Saturday, December 14, with a holiday cookie delivery to residents on Elma St. and Chalker St. where First Serve volunteers worked on yard and porch clean up and repair projects. Upcoming events to watch for are: a sledding party at Patterson Park Community Center where the warming barrel is up and ready to keep sledders warm; garden clean up in the spring at Akron Coop Farms, bingo game event at Lauer Apartments; food collection for North Hill Community House.  The First Serve Committee is planning these events and will post details on the First Serve website.

The First Serve Warming Barrel Dedication took place on January 25, at Patterson Park in North Hill, Akron. Approximately 30 people enjoyed hot cocoa, s’mores and observed how the barrel works! There was plenty of heat coming from the barrel once the fire got started! Every weekend there is snow, Jeff Incorvia, Supervisor of Patterson Park Community Center, and his staff will light the fire in this barrel so the neighborhood kids can enjoy the warmth as they sled ride on the hill!

Rediscover the purpose of First Serve on February 23, 6:00 pm at The First Congregational Church of Hudson as we view, UnDivided, a documentary showing the tremendous impact a church had on a struggling inner-city high school in Oregon. There will be a light supper as well as childcare for children ten and under. Reconnect with members of your 2019 First Serve team and hear about plans for our upcoming day of service set for Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020. This will be a great event to invite a friend to learn more about First Serve. Please use the link below to register for the event by February 21, 2020.

Thank you for everything you have done for our community and Community Center.  I know the community will enjoy and take advantage of everything all your First Serve Project Leaders and volunteers have done for the people in our community.
